How IP Lookup Works

Limitations of IP Geolocation

IP geolocation is not precise enough to identify an individual's location. Results typically show:

  • The location of the ISP's point of presence, not the user's physical address
  • The registered location of a corporate network, not where employees are working
  • The location of a VPN server or proxy, not the user's actual location

Accuracy varies by region — results are generally more accurate in densely populated areas with many ISP nodes.

Why Would You Look Up an IP Address?

IP lookup is useful for understanding your own connection details, verifying that a VPN is working correctly, investigating suspicious network activity, or simply learning about how internet addressing works. It's a fundamental networking diagnostic tool.

Accuracy varies by provider and region. Typically, results identify the correct city and country, but cannot pinpoint an exact street address. The geolocation may reflect the ISP's infrastructure rather than the user's location.
You can look up any publicly routable IP address. Private IP ranges (like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) will not return meaningful geolocation data because they are not assigned to specific locations on the public internet.
IP geolocation databases map IP addresses to the location of the ISP's network infrastructure, which may be in a different city than where you physically are. Mobile carriers often route traffic through central hubs in other cities.
